I have a small question for those of you that speak Spanish...
Hace mucho tiempo he pensado que debería escribir no solo en Inglés sino en Español también. Lo que no he resuelto es si debería comenzar otro blog (un duplicado de este) o simplemente escribir en ambos idiomas aquí mismo. ¿Que opinan?
El plan es comenzar el año nuevo con los dos idiomas. Por adelantado les pido mil disculpas por los "horrores" de ortografía, falta de tildes, etc. Se que en algún momento u otro me hará falta algo. Para los que no sepan y tengan curiosidad, he vivido la gran parte de mi vida en Estados Unidos pero viví unos años en Colombia.
Acepto sugerencias de todo tipo.

ReplyDeleteYo te sugiero un blog en cada idioma. A mí me ha funcionado muy bien así, todo es muy claro principalmente cuando tus lectoras buscan información en posts anteriores y como que hay algo que hace sentir a quien te lee de una forma más personal y cálida. Es cierto que consume mucho más tiempo trabajar en dos blogs diferentes pero a la larga el resultado es muy gratificante. Yo adoro todo lo que haces y sé que tu blog en español va a inspirar a muchísimas personas. Un abrazo grande.
I think you should do what's easiest. If it is easier to write both languages on the same post, do it. If it is who you are, do it! Your posts are awesome, no matter which language (or both) you write in.
ReplyDeleteA mi tampoco me molestaría ambos idiomas en un mismo post, aunque tal vez tener dos blogs diferentes, uno para cada idioma, ayudaría a tener RSS feeds separados, y ya dependiendo de cada quien y sus preferencias, pues se suscriben.

there's a knitting website called Pickle that's based out of Sweden (I think) and they blog in both languages. their native tongue before the picture, then a picture, then in English.

ReplyDeleteEres muy talentosa y creativa. Mi sugerencia es que escribas en los dos idiomas al tiempo. Es una gran ventaja ser bilingue y poder comunicarte con tus seguidores sea en ingles y/o en español al mismo tiempo.
I would love to see you blog in both languages on the same blog! I must admit that I do not speak Spanish other than a few words and phrases, but I was curious enough to have BabelFish translate it for me. Maybe I will learn a little more Spanish this way.

ReplyDeleteMe gustan los que tienen los dos idiomas porque puedes ver las dos versiones allí mismo sin tener que cambiar de dirección. Hay que admitir, muchas de nosotras somos bilingues y nos gusta la combinación de los 2 idiomas :) Que chévere que estás considerando añadir el español!!

ReplyDeleteI think the question you should ask is why do you want to do it in both languages. If you want to do it in Spanish because it feels more natural and/or you miss writing in Spanish, then I would suggest to post in Spanish on the same blog. If, however, you would like to reach a greater audience and would just be duplicating posts, I would avoid such an endeavor as it may become tedious over time. If you are afraid of losing English only readers (and you post in both languages on the same blog), one way to overcome the language barrier is to add a tool the website to instantly translate. Yes, the translation would not be exactly what you wrote, but the general idea would be conveyed. One such tool is comes from Google: http://translate.google.com/translate_tools?hl=en. Hope this helps. One more thing, the pictures you post are worth a thousands words in any language.
ReplyDeleteYou sound like my husband. He suggested the Google translation too. It's something else I'm considering. It will be more work for me because, although I am a fluent Spanish speaker, writing it is more difficult for me. I'm out of practice. At this point I'm still evaluating what I want to do, and as you say, my motivations to do it. Thanks for your input—all very valid.

Yo también escribo en dos idiomas (bueno, lo intento) y prefiero que estén en el mismo blog. Personalmente pienso que tener otro sólo en español es duplicar tu trabajo. Un besote!
ReplyDeleteYo por mi parte lo hago en 3. Es más trabajoso, pero creo que en cada uno de ellos siempre hay un matiz especial. Yo los prefiero en un mismo blog.

ReplyDeletemi opinion es dos blogs :) ya sé que es mas trabajo pero a mi en particular no me gusta cuando hay un "pedazo" que no entiendo...queda como mas "limpio" cuando esta en un solo idioma.

A mí me costaría más actualizar dos blogs a la vez... No te preocupes por los errores, la verdad es que el texto que has escrito está muy bien!

ReplyDeleteI write a "life blog" in portuguese; a work blog in english and a common-project blog in english and spanish (both in the same post).
I found out that just translating exactly what I had written in english was very, very tedious for me, so I went for personal satisfaction: when the blog is mine, and mine alone, I let go one of the languages. When the blog is shared, I slightly modify the text so that I´m writing 2 posts about the same subject.
I´m so happy with your blog (in english) that I don´t think I´ll subscribe to another one in spanish to read about the same topic (please don´t be offended by this).

A mí también me gusta la idea de tener varios idiomas en el mismo blog: por la mezcla de culturas que eso supone, porque me gusta practicar idiomas y porque creo que da menos trabajo.

I've battled with the same question since I started my blog, three years ago. Initially, I would write some posts in English, and some in Spanish - certain topics give themselves easier to me on my native tongue. But, as I started gaining some recurrent (English) readers, I slowly stopped the Spanish posts.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I know for sure... There's no way I would ever stick to writing each post in both languages. If I hardly have time to write, can't imagine adding the translation time. And the web translation tools do a very bad job with Spanish... They don't know how to handle the very different grammar.
So in case it helps you... Because my blog was bilingual in its beginnings, I did some things to keep both languages separately: Every post I write is categorized by language. That way, I can provide links to all content in English, and Spanish.
The fear of alienating English speakers with random Spanish posts always is there. But I don't think it should stop us from writing in Spanish. Most of the traffic hitting my web site comes from web searches, so providing content in Spanish, I think is added value. Some English readers skip those Spanish posts, and some find them interesting enough to attempt to read.

Pienso que lo mas practico seria incluir los dos idiomas en el mismo blog, en el mismo post. Tal como lo has hecho aqui. Tu post puede ser primero en Ingles, e inmediatamente despues en Espanol. Pienso que tus lectores de ambos idiomas se acostumbrarian rapidamente a este nuevo formato.
By the way, I think it is great that you are thinking about writing in Spanish. I will be very interested to see how you end up implementing the Spanish posts.

Hola! mi opinion es que lo mejor es tener en el mismo blog los post en ambos idiomas. En mi blog lo hago asi, no tan seguido como quisiera, ya que leo bien el ingles pero siempre he sido muy mala escribiendo :) Trato de traducir todo lo que puedo. Creo que asi es mas practico que tener 2 blogs.

Hola! I was excited to see your post in Spanish, and even more excited to read that you would be blogging in both languages in the future! I'm a languages student, and bilingual blogs where you can easily see the two different texts are really useful! It's so much easier to 'study' when the subject interests me :) As for format, perhaps you could place the Spanish (I'm assuming English would be your main language) after the cut? It means that fluent speakers can switch straight to their preferred language, but those of us who would like both have an easy reference on offer... Also, then there's no need to set up and administer another blog!

Creo que un blog en español sería genial... En realidad hay muy pocos blogs de manualidades en la red, y la posibilidad que trae un blog de tener enlaces, blogroll, imagenes y recomendaciones también en español creo que se perdería si se escribe en español en el mismo blog. Igual te estaré leyendo!

Sea de la forma que sea, me alegra mucho que empieces un blog en español! Si bien leo bien inglés, hay algunas cosas específicas o tutorials que ofreces que es difícil seguir en otro idioma.

Hi Patricia! I love your blog. First time I bumped into it. If you would like to post in Spanish also, by all means, you know that crafts are an ancient cultural custom among people's of Hispanic descent, since Spaniards have always been given to a lot of handcrafts and they broght that with them into the Latino culture. One thing though, try not to use regionalisms in your instructions or you are liable to confuse many of your readers and not be able to get out of a tangle of continually answering questions for clarifications! I worked for 5 years as a translator in a publishing house and I know what I mean! Spanish is not the same in all regions. There is an international Spanish which is used for business and that is the one I suggest you use. Or just simple stay away from your native vernacular expressions so that your readers, who might not know them, might understnad you better. Take care! I wish you well in your endeavors.

Hola, creo que debes hacer lo que te guste mas o con lo que te sientas mas comoda... pero yo preferiria tener todo en un mismo blog...Hasta ahora te leo en Ingles lo que me permite esforzarme mas por aprender el idioma. Sigo varios otros blogs que son en dos idiomas (ingle-frances o ingles -español) y lo encuentro muy entretenido
