recycle project no. 15 - tealight holder

I don't know what it is but some of my project ideas come just as I'm about to drift off to sleep. The funny thing is that now that I've realized this, I look forward to those minutes of free-for-all thinking and it makes me go to bed sooner than I normally would. I'm a night owl at heart so this helps me a lot.

This small project is one of the ones that came about in one of my 'pre-sleep' sessions. I would be happier with the design if the paper were flush with the votive. The obvious safety issues with a flame being so close to paper keep me from doing that. I still consider this a work in progress so that's why I'm not posting a tutorial.

  1. I really like the "tension" of this piece: the flames rising in the middle of what looks like a flammable "nest" of paper. It would keep everybody wondering if it would all go up in flames.

  2. I'm very interested in seeing how you did this. I like that it looks impermanent, but has a sense of functionality too.

  3. I like how it feels very natural, but still modern because it's newsprint. Love this and can't wait to try it out.

  4. Such a lovely, cozy, and comfortable nest! May I ask if you would share a how-to on keeping the paper shreds together? Thank you and I love the story about your daughter skipping. Most of the time life feels too busy, so those moments of magic with children are even more precious.

  5. This is lovely. I love how the paper looks all nested like that. When you are finished, can you please post a pic of the candle lit inside? I would love to see the effect of it in the night.

  6. Patricia, I was just reading in the book No More Mondays about how the best ideas come to us in times like that--in those moments before we drift off to sleep. So cool!

  8. Dionne - I'd love to take a photo of it at night. I still don't have my good camera fixed (broken lens - wahhh) but when I do I'll give it shot (pun!?)

Donna - Very cool that it isn't just my imagination.

Michelle - Yes, I can see this working with tissue paper too. I hadn't seen those electric flames but that would definitely set my mind at ease. As it is now it looks pretty but the risk of it going up in flames is just not something I'd want to toy with.

  11. I actually cannot read the comments that have already been made, the type is too small for me.
BUT, I wanted to say that I really think the tea light could be accomplished with one of those artificial tea lights in a votive.'OR maybe with metal shavings or strips. I loved your idea.
